Homemade Peanut Butter
A few years ago, at the grand old age of 44, I tried peanut butter for the first time ever. It was during a visit to my cousins house in Canada that summer. I couldn't believe that I had been missing out on this for so long. It was delicious and had been handmade by my cousins wife. Since my return, I have purchased a jar every week or so as I love it on toast for breakfast, or in a sandwich for lunch or as a snack. This weekend, I decided to make some and found it to be equally delicious. The recipe below involves no cooking and only 4 ingredients - what could be simpler? Go ahead and try it for yourself!
Makes 1 delicious jar of peanut butter.
Time - 5 minutes to make
INGREDIENTS:
2 1/2 cups salted peanuts
2/3 tablespoons vegetable oil
pinch of sugar
2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (I prefer the latter)
Method
1. Put peanuts in food processor/blender and blend until smooth. This may take up to 5 minutes to achieve a creamy consistency. It takes a few minutes for the peanuts to be chopped up finely, and then it will form a thick mixture and eventually a creamy paste.
2. Next, add the sugar, honey and oil and blend in for a minute or so. (The oil will make the peanut butter spreadable).
3. Spoon the mixture into a tub or jar and put in the refrigerator to firm up.
4. Spread onto bread or toast and enjoy. Mmmmm
An ideal gift
A jar of homemade peanut butter makes a great gift for kids to give to their teachers at half term, or to take along as a thanksgiving present. Just ensure that the recipient and their family are not allergic to nuts.
Tips
Thoroughly wash out an old jar and fill with your homemade peanut butter. Make up and print off a pretty label and attach to the front. If you don't have a lid for the jar, buy a jam jar cover and attach with an elastic band or tie with some raffia.
This recipe is so easy that the kids will love to get involved making it too. No need to ever run out of peanut butter again.
